Frequently Asked Questions

Weight Loss and Weight Management Treatment

Do you prescribe semaglutide or other weight loss medications or weight loss pills such as substances such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Metformin, Trulicity, Saxenda, Wegovy, or Rybelsus?

The safety and well-being of our patients is our number one priority.

Depending on your weight loss goals and the discussion with your provider, some weight loss and weight management treatments may include behavior modification, such as changes to diet and exercise routines, or prescription medications that can include semaglutide treatments that are often known under brand names like Ozempic or Wegovy.

Please note that these treatments are currently experiencing significant stock issues, and the cost is not always covered by insurance.

Your provider will work with you to determine if a medication is clinically appropriate as a part of your overall treatment plan.

We do not prescribe controlled substance medications as part of weight loss treatment plans.

What states do you operate in?

To see our list of currently available states, begin booking an appointment.

You must be currently residing in the state of treatment as well as have your primary pharmacy be in that same state in order to be a patient at our practice.

Do I need to book my appointment with a doctor (MD or DO), or can I book my appointment with any provider (PA-C, NP, etc)?

You do not need to book your initial appointment with a doctor. You can book your appointment with any provider that we have available. Our providers are all trained in Weight Loss and Weight Management. They all work closely together to make sure that we are providing the same excellent standard of care to all patients regardless of which provider you book your appointment with.

How long are the appointments?

Initial intake appointments are 30 mins. Follow-up appointments are typically 20 minutes each.

Billing and Insurance

What insurance do you accept?

We contract with most PPO insurance plans. If you are a California Bay Area resident, we also work with a small number of HMO plans.

To verify if we work with your insurance, simply start booking an appointment online. You will be prompted to enter your insurance details and will receive eligibility results instantly as well as an estimate of your appointment cost prior to confirming your appointment.

Some PPO plans that we currently work with are:

Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, Health Net, Humana, and United Healthcare.

If your plan is not in-network, cash pay is accepted for all services.

Plans that we cannot work with are:

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide care for patients who have Medi-Cal or Medicaid insurance. This is because we are not licensed Medi-Cal or Medicaid providers, so we are not able to provide care, even if these patients choose to pay cash instead of use their insurance. If you have Medi-Cal or Medicaid, please do not book an appointment with us, as we will be unable to provide care even if you do not enter your insurance information.

Other

What happens after I am prescribed?

After you are diagnosed, if you are prescribed medications, we will coordinate sending these prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy.

You may have a 2-week follow-up if you are on a new dosage for treatment. Once your treatment has stabilized, you will have monthly follow-up appointments to maintain treatment.

If you have questions at any time, please feel free to chat with your provider and care team via our secure app.
Clinically Appropriate

Clinically appropriate treatment, tailored on a case-by-case basis.

We put patients first in every decision we make, and follow clinical guidelines based on evidence-based medicine to ensure patients get the most effective care possible.

What are the risks of being overweight?

Being overweight can increase the risk of developing several health problems. Some of those risks include:

Cardiovascular Disease: Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. The extra weight can strain the heart, leading to an increased risk of heart disease.

Type II Diabetes: Being overweight can increase the risk of developing type II diabetes, which is a condition in which the body can't use insulin properly.

Cancer: Some types of cancer, such as breast, colon, and kidney cancer, have been demonstrated to be more common in people who are overweight.

Joint Problems: Carrying extra weight can put stress on the joints, leading to an increased risk of osteoarthritis and other joint problems.

Sleep Apnea: Being overweight can increase the risk of sleep apnea, which is a condition in which breathing stops and starts during sleep.

How do I know if I need weight loss treatment or a prescription?

The decision of whether or not you need weight loss treatment will be made between you and your provider in accordance with your health goals, and will be different for each person.

One common indicator that is often used to determine if someone is overweight is called Body Mass Index, or BMI. BMI is calculated by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared, and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703. (The CDC has a BMI calculator that can be found here .) A BMI of over 25 is considered overweight, and a BMI of over 30 is considered obese. However, keep in mind that BMI is a screening tool, and it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.

Depending on your weight loss goals and the discussion with your provider, some weight loss and weight management treatments may include behavior modification, such as changes to diet and exercise routines, or prescription medication.

Medications that are sometime prescribed for weight loss may include Ozempic, Mounjaro, Metformin, Trulicity, Saxenda, Wegovy, Rybelsus, and others. Your provider will work with you to determine if a medication is clinically appropriate as a part of your overall treatment plan.

It's easy to get an appointment. It's nice to be able to not have to sit in an office waiting to be seen. My provider makes me feel like she actually remembers me and I'm not just another folder slapped on her desk. It's very nice. She also discusses treatment with me instead of just throwing pills at me and saying do this or do that. I feel involved and in charge of my own health.

What is medical weight loss?

Medical weight loss is weight loss that is guided or supervised by a healthcare professional. A healthcare provider can take a look at your health history and examine your current health to determine a safe and sustainable path to help you lose weight. A medical weight loss program may involve diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and prescription medication if medically necessary. Along with helping you safely lose weight, the goal is to also to identify and understand the underlying reasons for your weight gain in the first place.

How to lose weight

Losing weight will be a different journey for everyone. Weight loss programs are not a one-size-fits-all approach, and your needs may vary based on your health, weight, age, and other factors. With that being said, there are some general guidelines for health weight loss. These include:

  • Diet - Following a healthy diet is often part of any sustainable weight loss program. Your healthcare provider may recommend a balanced diet of carbs, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Exercise - Exercise can be a powerful way to not only lose weight and keep it off, but to improve your health overall.
  • Lifestyle changes - Lifestyle changes can also help with weight loss. Changes like getting more sleep and reducing alcohol intake can play a role in reaching weight loss goals.
  • Medication - When medically appropriate, your healthcare provider may recommend medications or supplements to help you with your weight loss journey.

Remember, weight loss can take time. It's important to be patient and consistent when trying to achieve weight loss results.
